HOPE ACTION for 2020
Like most of the Year of Conversation projects, Hope Action is a collaboration, this time between the Fruitmarket Gallery and A Year of Conversation 2019. This project marks the last act of A Year of Conversation. But it marks the start of a year-long project called Writers Shift, in which five poets (Janette Ayachi, Callie Gardner, Jane Goldman, Iain Morrison and Tom Pow) reflect on the bridging period between the Fruitmarket’s closure for extension and its opening. It is therefore a project which marks ends and beginnings.
The quotations on the four postcards and on the poster are drawn from readings that have resonated strongly throughout a Year of Conversation. On their reverse are prompts for reflection and for conversation. The cards, wherever they are given, are gifts. We hope they will be useful to those who receive them.
The cards were ‘launched’ at the Fruitmarket Bookstore as part of a Writers Shift event for Book Week. They will be widely distributed in Edinburgh and, on the day of the election (12 December) the Writers Shift will take over an empty space in the Waverley Mall from which to distribute cards in and around the neighbourhood. The cards are fitting for the time of year and will also be distributed on Saint Andrews Day and at the end of the year at the Scottish Storytelling Centre to mark the end of the old and the beginning of the new. Even without the cards themselves, you can make use of the thought-sparks below.

HOPE ACTION MANIFESTO      #AYOC2019   #WritersShift
We believe that “We belong to all countries.” (Michel de Montaigne)
We believe that “From the dancing came the dancing.” (Tommy Orange)
We believe that “The universal is the local minus the walls.” (Miguel Torga)
We believe that “No word that speaks of what it is to be human is untranslatable.” (Mireille de Gansel)
We vote for these beliefs in our hearts, in our conversations and in our creativity.
